A category of Bettas with its separate bloodlines and known little outside of the small fish fighting community and in this time and age whereby the game is being frowned upon, even aquarium shops do not stock them anymore. In other words you don?t get to see them and care even less whether Singapore still kept the fighting line.
With some friends, we visited Mr Tan aka Bah Chua, an old hand in the business in Lim Chu Kang area and owning no less then 50 concrete ponds which he rents from a ornamental fish farm, where purpose bred fighting lines could be still be had and are of good quality.
With the phasing out of ornamental fish farming in place of food fish farming, the place may very soon loses its licence to operate and finding new locations may not be easy. With age catching up on him and suitable locations limited in the coming years, Mr Tan may well be the last of the Singapore fighting fish breeders.
